alone.

All happiness that is dependent on others
is bound to disappear sooner or later.
It is temporary, it is momentary, it is illusory.
Only that joy is yours which wells up
within your own being.

Hence Buddha says:
delight in meditation
delight in solitude

Aloneness is the joy of being just yourself.
It is being joyous with yourself,
it is enjoying your own company.

There are very few people
who enjoy their own company.
And it is a very strange world:
nobody enjoys his company
and everybody wants others to enjoy his company.

little pleasures!

whenever i get a short break, mostly during meals, patrick and i have been watching dragon ball!!!!

oh my gosh this show is SO awesome.  it's hilarious, thrilling, quite strange, and believe it or not- inspiring too!

goku is so positive and happy.  i want to be just like goku.

when patrick first introduced me to this show i was really hesitant- a japanese cartoon, i thought i gotta be too old for this... but turns out, nope, i'm not!  there are like 1000 episodes and i'm just getting started.  horray!

it's amazing we can watch episodes for free at dbz.tv .  that never happens!

planning for the next generations.

good morning!

i am lucky enough to have a sweet guest post today by shelley mirriam, science student and writer for masters in environmental science.

i asked is she could research cotton for me.  i know a bit about cotton and its effect on the environment, but i'd like to know more.  especially because i'm really excited to start making yoga clothes from hemp and organic cotton.

we as consumers need to start demanding sustainable products, especially in a big business as wasteful as the fashion industry.

i know the awesome brand 7th generation uses this quote already, but i kinda like to use it as my own personal motto for purusha:

"in our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." -- the great law of the iroquois confederacy

awesome huh?!

so without further adieu, here is the super informative lowdown on cotton and the future of textiles:

5 Reasons We Should Search for Alternatives to Cotton:

Those cotton clothes may be comfy, but they can actually be harmful to the environment. While it is used to make everything from jeans to unmentionables, it can also be hard on the land, air, water, etc. And there are alternatives to it. To help give you a better understanding, we have gathered five reasons why cotton is not sustainable for a healthy environment.

1. Pesticides – Did you know that five of the pesticides used on cotton in the United States are classified by the EPA as Category I and II, which are the most dangerous? They are cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite, and trifluralin. In addition, about 25% of all insecticides used each year are used in cotton growth. Check out this report from EcoChoices to learn more.

2. Water – Unlike other alternatives, it takes a lot of water to grow a crop of cotton. According to Treehugger, it takes 400 gallons of water to grow enough cotton for one t-shirt and 1,800 gallons for one pair of jeans.

3. Chemicals – Tons of chemicals go into the growth of cotton. In fact, in the U.S. alone about $2 billion’s worth of chemicals are sprayed onto cotton crops every year. Half of these chemicals have been deemed hazardous by the World Health Organization. You can read more here.

4. Biggest Offender – Did you know that the Organic Trade Association has called cotton the “world’s dirtiest crop?” It uses 2.5% of the globe’s cultivated land but uses 16% of the world’s insecticides. There is more here from Business Ethics.

5. Alternatives – However, the news for cotton isn’t all bad. As with most crops, there is a way to grow it organically and safely. Another talked about alternative to cotton is hemp, which can be used as food or as a clothing fiber. However, it also needs pesticides but can be grown organically too. Check out Slate to get a better idea of the pro’s and con’s of each crop.

in love.

liam on christmas day

i really love my doggie boy.  so much.

wearing his new backpack on a hike- a gift from aunt kate and uncle chris! ;)

yeah, i'm a little obsessed with this boy.  i feel like liam is my son, silly as it sounds.  he's just perfect. we spend pretty much every moment together.

my baby angel 'helping' me fold laundry

i always tell him he's the best boy and an angel guy.  sweetness overload, i know, but he is one of the top sweetest things in my life.  i feel really lucky that we found each other.

there is nothing quite like the friendship between dog and woman.  we eat the same meals together (literally, i make him whatever patrick and i eat, he doesn't eat dogfood!), play and laugh together, work out together, and even sleep together every night!  ( haha patrick is involved in these things too, but this post isn't about him! ;) )

a big part of life, i think, is about finding those beings and passions that help you to forget yourself and put the needs of others first.  and boy does liam do that!  i'll work my plans around when i take him out on a run in 18 degree weather.  'cause it makes him sooo happy.

sometimes i think i don't want to have children and just have a family of yellow labs.  a crazy dog lady.  whatever.  haha.  just kidding.  kinda... ;)

woah.

good day!

i am loving 2012 so far, are you?!

i love it because all of a sudden i have this huge desire to change, and to take full responsibility for my life.  we humans are funny and awesome like that- that something like the changing of a date can trigger our metamorphosis.

like i said a few posts ago, i understand change is slow.  this is a good thing.  it allows patience and time to habituate ourselves.

anywho, we are all changing everyday!  isn't that wonderful!?

a big change i'm making is to let go of my yoga asana practice, or the rigorous exercises i put my body through everyday.  i'm not "quitting" or anything like that, i've just recognized my asana is no longer serving me.

everyday i practice yoga poses and go on a run.  i can honestly say i enjoy working my body, but somehow i've been neglecting to work my mind.  duh!  what happened?!

i mean, yeah, i work and develop my business each day, but i don't take enough time to truly strengthen my mind.

i had this revelation the other day: the body = the mind, and the mind = the body.  pretty simple.  they aren't separate, and neglecting one leads to neglect of the system as a whole.

and then i was listening to spotify's dr. jeffrey thompson radio and heard the best 'song' ever!!  the best piece of music and spoken word for me at that very moment.

the universe really is delivering it's half of the bargain to me, and i am so grateful.  we are definitely meeting each other half way- horray!

the music i heard that i fell in love with was a piece of hypnosis.  more specifically, self esteem hypnosis.  i tried it out yesterday while sitting on my mat and found myself deeply relaxed and building a very small love for myself.

i think all of us struggle with doubts and lack of self esteem from time to time.  but why?  i don't think we have to think like that.

the hypnosis told me:  good things just happen to me.  i deserve success, money, and love.  i am confident about myself and my future.  i attract just what i need all the time.  i am becoming brighter and softer everyday.  i will meet my dreams.  stuff like that!  WOAH! (that's a joey lawrence woah)!

i don't tell myself things like that throughout the day.  i'm not extremely negative or anything, but i think i let my mind go off sometimes to tangents that end up at fearful and timid places.  but that's only because of the words i tell myself to be true.  so why not change those words?  what do we have to lose?!

one of my intentions this year is to meditate every morning.  great intention.  i'm starting everyday with self hypnosis.  it's pretty crazy- 30 minutes can go by in a snap when you are in deep relaxation mode.  it's really quite fun!

so my yoga asana- of course i still love the health benefits and how it makes me feel in my body, but for now it's going to take a backseat to my meditation.  i need meditation more.

and when i look at why i practice yoga postures, i'll admit it is often for egotistical reasons.  to keep fit, build muscles, show off my hand stand (haha ughh!!  who cares right?!  it's just amateur gymnastics!), etc.  not that there is anything terribly wrong with any of that.  however that kind of practice has its place, and i don't think its worth devoting most of my free time to.  i realize yoga asana practice for others might not be as superficial, just for me, i'm saying it can be.

meditation is almost the opposite for me- very humbling, very grounding.  i'm not moving my body, so there's nothing material i can really compare myself to at that time.  there's only my busy busy mind there, waiting and wanting to go into autopilot mode so it can do what it thinks it needs to do.

that is, until i introduce my self hypnosis, my new mantras to regain pilotship of my mind.  after only 2 days of practicing positive phrases i feel like such a happier and more relaxed person.  yep, change is slow, there will be set backs.  as long as we stay on the path and keep devoting ourselves to worthy discipline, our lives will keep unfolding and revealing beauty as long as we live.  just gotta put in the effort and never give in to mediocrity.

letting go of my yoga practice, i feel really free.  like i had this regimen i thought i must adhere to, yet i wasn't questioning if it was working for me and making me a better person.  hehe, kind of like a slave to yoga.  oh boy.

i've felt sort of disillusioned from yoga for a while.  yogis are no different (in my opinion) from other people.  we can decide to be mindful compassionate beings without a yoga practice.  my partner patrick is the sweetest most respectful man i know, and he barely practices yoga.  he's a musician, a deep thinker, an investor.  in fact, some yogis i've come across are some of the most hypocritical judgmental people i know! ah!

i'm super pumped about my new found dedication to my mental health.  i can't believe i've gone this long without exercising it.  i'm beyond excited to see where i can go from here now that i'm just beginning to get my mind in check.

one more thing, this post is getting long!  my mom came by yesterday and told me she had one more christmas gift for me!  i opened up the lovely box, and inside is a gorgeous hand made fair trade meditation cushion!!! what?!  i didn't even tell her yet about my new passion!  isn't it beautiful when things like that happen?

well, i'd better go and live my day.  i vow to live it by my positive truthful words, and i wish you the same!  love and sweetness to you all!

just what i needed to hear.

good morning!

i love TED talks!  don't we all right?!  super inspiring videos to watch while eating lunch :)

i watched this one yesterday.  just clicked it pretty randomly.  and it is perfect for me at this moment.

yesterday i was feeling a bit frustrated that i don't have money.  i was comparing purusha to other clothing businesses that just have start up money because somehow these people were wealthy to begin with.  i thought- how unfair, that they are able to get ahead simply because they had capital at the start.  and this business is getting written about in forbes and on so many blogs!! ah!

ok first, this is a reminder to be true to my first intention for the year- to not compare myself to others.  there is no one like me or purusha, and i'm not like anyone else or their business.  that's the beauty of it.

and second, this TED talk speaks volumes to my dreaming heart.  the wright brothers- wow, i had no idea they made the first flying machine with no money and with no press.  while, what's his name (i can't even remember now!), had the ny times following him around and had $50,000 at his disposal and came up with nothing and then quit after the wright brothers made a plane first.  didn't even try to improve upon it.

it's so true, businesses succeed because of the WHY, not the WHAT.  we want to find ourselves in a brand, find our personality and beliefs ringing true in what we purchase.

so yeah, i don't have start up money and i'm not looking to borrow money.  i don't think people are as interested in a company history that says, 'we made the business with our parent's money and never really had to get our hands dirty.  everything went smoothly with little problems.  the end.'  we want the under dog to win, we want to see a struggle, we want to see someone build something from nothing.

because it's inspiring to see someone, perhaps someone just like you, build their dreams from scratch.  then maybe this makes you think, i can do it too.  what's stopping us?  there's nothing stopping us.

so dream big my friends!  if your heart is in it people will recognize that.  i truly think that people can spot a phony or a copycat that's in it for the WHAT rather than the WHY from miles away.

today, let us ponder the WHY.

intentions.

"i will stick to my plans, and i will be proud of myself!"

i'm not one for thinking that in one day, or even one year, everything will be different.  change takes time, and it's super challenging!  but i do think it is so helpful to have attainable goals (and a few seemingly unattainable goals too!).

so, are you ready?!  have you set some intentions for 2012?

here are my goals:

1. catch myself when i compare myself to others.  and then remind myself i only have to be myself and everything will be fine!
2. wake up early, to bed early
3. eat lighter dinners
4. hang out with girlfriends more
5. get my work done earlier in the day
6. to have better composure when i'm emotional, and still offer sweetness and compassion to others when i'm sad/frustrated/confused
7. spend less time on the computer, more time reading books
8. meditate every morning
9. write in my blog, journal, and inspiration books daily
10. spend more time alone in my little 'purusha' room- brainstorming, dreaming, planning, thinking, working.

and my bigger crazier goals are:

1. make all purusha clothing from organic/recycled/sustainable fabrics
2. hire 1-2 people to work with me
3. be featured in shape, self, or yoga journal magazine
4. find a good cause to start donating a portion of all purusha sales to
5. travel to another country.  pretty much anywhere, i'd go anywhere ;)

and always always, to spend more time in LOVE.  sharing love with everyone around me.

hope your first week of 2012 is beautiful!
