a visit to the museum

"i paint objects as i think them,
not as i see them."
-pablo picasso

every saturday my mom and i are getting together and doing something fun and different.

two weeks ago we visited this awesome and strange asian grocery store in west hartford, called a dong.  we found so many treasures- unique chinese teas and herbs, taro!!, miso, and beautiful blue and white china- bowls, plates, tea cups, etc.

this previous weekend we went to the wadsworth atheneum in hartford, the oldest public art museum in america!  i haven't been there since elementary school.  i'm also in the midst of painting a picture of django reinhardt, so i wanted a little inspiration... and i think i found it!

check out the wadsworth here:

the beautiful museum!  wow!

here are some of my favorite paintings displayed at the atheneum, at least those that i can remember!:

Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958)
Maisons au bord de la Seine à Chatou

i love the dabs of paint in this one, that little dots can come together and make a refreshing and sweet scene!

Max Ernst (1891-1976)
Europe After the Rain

this painting is so mysterious and eerie to me, and done via decalcomania- putting paint on the canvas with pieces of glass!

Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on the Beach

the first dali painting i've ever seen in real life- so much is going on here- nothing is what it seems.

Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900)
Vale of St. Thomas, Jamaica

this painting is huge!!  so grandiose, vast, and really gives the feeling of the tropics- rainy, hot, and steamy.

Adolphe William Bougeureau (1825-1905)
Idyll: Family from Antiquity

this painting is so sweet to me- the ideal happy little family.  i love how the woman's feet are folded- you can tell she is content and relaxed.

Marc Chagall (1887-1985)
Autumn in the Village

aw chagall, you can do no wrong.  i love the sweet innocent feeling in his work, it makes me feel safe and simple in some way.

i'm excited to get to work on my painting!  and to draw inspiration from these works into purusha clothing design!  yay!
